Renowned as most sacred dwadashi kshetra and a home to twelve Jyotirlinga shrines, Barshi is famed for its Bhagawant temple. In this land is famed the historical ekadashi observance of Ambarish, son of sage Kapila, of the solar lineage. It was none other than Lord Narada who instructed Ambarisha to observe the ekadashi vrata here. The power of this vow increased the spiritual power of Ambarish, something which made even Indra worry about the security of his own ultimate supremacy. Durvasa was thus sent to disturb the penance, but he did not succeed in routing out Ambarisha—the discus hurled at Ambarisha, the supreme devotee of Hari, at a small slip, misfired, back to sage Durvasa. Praised by Hari, the protector of devotees, Ambarish lived in this place called Barshi.

ज्योतिर्लिंगों के द्वादश क्षेत्रों में सबसे पवित्र माना जाने वाला क्षेत्र बार्शी भगवंत मंदिर के लिए प्रख्यात है। सूर्यवंशी कुल में जन्मे कपिल ऋषि के पुत्र राजा अम्बरीष के ऐतिहासिक एकादशी व्रतों के कारण यह भूमि पावन मानी जाती है। देवर्षि नारद ने राजा अम्बरीष को इस क्षेत्र में एकादशी व्रत करने का निर्देश दिया था। इस व्रत से राजा अम्बरीष की आध्यात्मिक शक्ति इतनी बढ़ गई कि देवराज इन्द्र को अपने परम वर्चस्व और सुरक्षा की चिंता सताने लगी। इन्द्र ने दुर्वासा ऋषि को राजा अम्बरीष का तप भंग करने के लिए भेजा, किन्तु सफल नहीं हो सके। अंत में दुर्वासा ने हरि भक्त अम्बरीष का अंत करने के लिए उनपर चक्र चला दिया, किन्तु हरि कृपा से वे ज़रा फ़िसल गए और चक्र राजा अम्बरीष को छू तक नहीं पाया। अमोघ चक्र दुर्वासा पर आघात करने के लिए लौट आया। अम्बरीष यहीं बार्शी में रहते थे।
